The owner couple waved us off with such warm, sincere smiles that the departure felt as lovely as the stay. The staff’s warmth had already changed my mind about the place. I arrived feeling skeptical because the furnishings and facilities seemed straight out of the 1980s or 90s, and my first impression wasn’t great. But the hotel was quiet, with very few guests, and we could use the outdoor hot spring whenever we wanted. It was really relaxing. Each evening there was a complimentary two-hour drink service in the lobby. We spent nearly the whole time there with beer and Japanese sake while our child had apple juice. The cozy seats had warm blankets that brought classic Japanese cartoons to mind, very comforting and nostalgic. Dinner was just the right amount and included Hida beef, a nice touch. There’s also a spot for stargazing at the countryside night sky, though it was too cloudy while we were there. I still appreciated that they had it. The stay turned out surprisingly wonderful and memorable. If you care more about heartfelt hospitality than luxury, I’d recommend it.

The time went by so quickly. The day visit includes the public baths, a seasonal traditional Japanese kaiseki meal, and the option to book the private outdoor onsen at no extra charge. The bath was so relaxing and the meal was incredible. The staff were lovely, too. Reception helped me understand the regional sweets and sake for sale so I could choose something local, and the woman who served me explained each dish. There’s also a shuttle from the ryokan to Ena or Nakatsugawa station. I’m really glad I visited. I didn’t stay overnight, so I can’t rate the rooms.

The onsen water was hotter than at others I’ve visited, so I couldn’t stay in for long. Still, the baths are large, with plenty of space to sit on the edge and cool down, especially outside. We had a varied, filling lunch that was nicely presented, then relaxed in the onsen, a great way to end the day. We’re already planning to come back for an overnight stay soon.

The room was comfortable overall, if a bit small, and being beside a running stream meant we could hear it throughout our stay. It wasn’t too disturbing. The hotel is quite dated, which surprised us when we arrived, but the staff were very friendly even though we don’t speak Japanese. The authentic onsen water was great for relaxing after a day out at Magome. They offer a ride to Magome and a pickup, so it’s a good place to rest while doing the Nakasendo trail. Dinner and breakfast were authentic Japanese food, with generous portions.

The prices seemed reasonable, and the food was satisfying. The onsen water was good, too. Staff of all ages were kind and helpful, always greeting us with smiles.
