Tajimaya Ryokan

The meals, the relaxing onsen, and even a traditional dance lesson made this one of the most unforgettable stays of my life. Tajimaya Inn was a highlight of my Nakasendo walk in Japan. The room was spacious, and we happened to get the only one with its own toilet. The historic building was bright, clean, and clearly cared for with love by the owner's family over eight generations. Our host was incredibly kind and friendly. Dinner and breakfast were delicious. Thank you for such a wonderful time!

The bath was surprisingly good, and both dinner and breakfast were delicious. Everything at Tajimaya in Magome felt immaculately clean and well looked after. The inn is very traditional and run by an eighth-generation owner. We were hosted so warmly, and staying here became one of the highlights of my time in Japan. If the host offers the traditional dance lesson, I'd recommend it. It was so much fun.

Dinner and breakfast were generous, varied, and really good. After dinner the owner performed the kiso-bushi song, and the following evening we got to learn the kiso-odori dance that goes with it. We were warmly welcomed and could leave our luggage while we walked the magome trail. Such a great stay, thank you!

Dinner and breakfast were plentiful and superb. It poured all night, so we couldn't walk around, but listening to the rain and frogs was lovely. The inn can also arrange luggage transport, which may be useful for the hikes and post town visits. Three of us stayed one night before hiking from Magome to Tsumago. The owner and staff were friendly, helpful, and wonderful. Our tatami room was split by screen doors into a living area and a bedroom. It was clean, with thick, comfortable futon mats, and was the only room with a private toilet and small sink. There are separate communal shower and bath facilities for men and women. Each person was assigned a 30-minute slot. My male friend and I shared our time, while my wife had the bath to herself. There were two open showers, plus wash sinks and toilets. The inn was full, perhaps around 12 guests, but we hardly saw anyone in those facilities, which were clean.
