The food was excellent, and our hosts were so welcoming. It was also really quiet and relaxing, with a bus stop right beside the guest house for easy trips to the World Heritage sites. Everything was very clean, even the bathhouse, and comfortable too. The beds were a particular favorite.

The bus driver even dropped us right in front of the hostel instead of at the station, then asked what time to pick us up for the ride back to town the next day. Japan gets a big 10 from me for that. The other guests were Japanese and very nice, and everyone in the family works at this small place. The mother was wonderful and generous. This is for travelers who want to experience everyday Japanese life, not just tour around. The family owns and runs the place, which has only six rooms, and staying here felt like a peaceful time capsule in the mountain countryside. There was hardly a sound. The room was fabulous, with tea and a private toilet, and we slept on futons on the floor. They even have rice cushions, the most comfortable cushions I’ve ever tried. Meals are entirely Japanese, including breakfast, with no croissants or bread. The big Japanese bath is downstairs. You take a kimono with you, shower first, then relax in the hot spring bath. It isn’t private, so another guest may come in and bathe naked with you at any time. The women’s and men’s baths are separate, of course. If you’re respectful and want a real Japanese stay in a small inn, this place deserves a visit. Learn a few Japanese phrases and be nice and respectful. Japanese people are the kindest in the world.

The family who runs this lovely place serves delicious, very traditional Japanese food, breakfast included. Getting around is simple enough if you take the heritage bus, which goes everywhere in the area.

The host was so nice, and breakfast was generous and filling. I really enjoyed it, especially the pickled dark plant they served. I’m curious what it was!

The bus stop for the World Heritage line is right in front of the guesthouse, which made exploring easy. The owners were incredibly kind and helpful, and both dinner and breakfast were highlights. I loved the peaceful, clean traditional Japanese rooms, which were very comfortable. It was a wonderful stay, and I’d definitely recommend this ryokan to family and friends.
