Naoshima Ryokan

After leaving Tokyo and Kyoto, we wanted somewhere calm and relaxing, and Naoshima Ryokan Roka was just right. The rooms are lovely and peaceful, and the staff were welcoming, attentive, and so kind. We enjoyed the provided loungewear enough to buy some to take home, and the beautiful, one of a kind Yukatas made us wish we could buy one too, but they aren’t for sale. We stayed two nights and had both breakfast and dinner. The menu changed every day, the staff explained each dish, and we enjoyed everything. They seemed to do their best to cater to allergies and dietary restrictions, though the regular menu is fixed and changes daily, so picky or non adventurous eaters should know that. We loved trying the real flavors of Japanese cuisine. The soaking tubs were amazing, and it was lovely looking out at nature from the porch. We rented bikes for a day of museum visits, though you can also schedule the van for drop-off and pick-up wherever you like. I’d highly recommend staying here and hope we can return.

The food was a highlight, with outstanding dinner and breakfast. The ryokan is an easy walk from all the island’s museums, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Everything is thoughtfully designed, calm inside and out, and makes it easy to relax. It made for a very special stay.

Dinner and breakfast were excellent, and the staff were friendly and helpful, with several speaking excellent English. We were two couples and loved our stay at Ryokan ROKA. It’s in a quiet spot within walking distance of the Naoshima New Museum and nearby bus stops. We used ROKA's complimentary shuttle to and from the port. The rooms were beautifully furnished in Japanese style, with very comfortable beds and everything at a high standard. The ofuro was inviting, with a lovely view of the mountainside.

The private onsen overlooking a peaceful forest behind the ryokan was the best part, such a nice break from busy city life. The room was cosy, and I really liked the firm futon and soft, flat pillows, just my preference. The food was enjoyable too, and they took great care of us. A note for other guests, please keep your voices down, since traditional Japanese walls are thin.
