The old house used to be a calligraphy school, which made for a fun traditional stay, though the toilet and shower weren’t ensuite. The quiet location is near a train station, but it’s far from the main station and sometimes you have to wait a long time for a train. What bothered us was how stingy the owner seemed. In three weeks of travel, nowhere else charged for towels, asked us to undo our futons and carry our linen downstairs ourselves, or refused to accept our luggage transfer.

Shunju-San, the owner, was so kind and fun to chat with. I was travelling alone and stayed three days in a traditional room all to myself. The inn is at least 100 years old, which made the stay even more memorable. One of the cutest places I’ve stayed, and I’ll definitely be back soon 🥹

Our first night sleeping on tatami mats was surprisingly comfortable, and we even got a free upgrade to the best room in the house, on the first floor. The people running the place are lovely, hospitable, and friendly, with lots of helpful information about where to go and what to do in Nara. I also loved the display of origami guests have made and left behind, since I enjoy folding it too. Maybe my sushi piece and square box rose are still there if you visit 😊

We had the tea ceremony with Mike today, and it was one of the best experiences of our three weeks here. He’s one of the nicest guys. He also showed us some cool local tips and tricks, and suggested a ramen place that turned out to be a great recommendation. He kindly warned us that the areas around our chosen hotels in OSAKA and Tokyo were both a little edgy, to say the least 😂 NEXT on the main street, it’s in my other reviews.
