I visited in late November 2016. This is a good choice if you want a quiet night away from the busy city center and don’t expect much from the facilities. The location was disappointing, and I’d suggest renting a bike downtown in Nara for the day. The elderly owner, whom I rarely saw, was very kind, though he speaks very little foreign language. The place gives you the feel of a Japanese countryside home at a reasonable price. Booking sites call it a Ryokan, but that’s just a classification. It’s far from the glamorous image people often have of Ryokans. Breakfast was neat and decent. The facilities are a bit lacking, but probably fine if you start with modest expectations. They brought a kettle filled with hot water to my room, which I used as needed.

Staying here felt like being in a Japanese home, with a chance to experience a family’s everyday life. We were very comfortable. Mr. Hasegawa was friendly and helpful, and helped us plan our itinerary, even though the location is a bit out of the way. We loved him!

I tried Nara’s zoni, the “kinako zoni” featured on “Secret Prefectural Show,” and it was delicious. As you’d expect from Nara, the ancient capital, Hatago Hasegawa is the only place people from other prefectures can go to try “kinako zoni” in Nara. Definitely worth a try.

I live in Fukuoka Prefecture, and went to Nara for a training seminar of the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology about three or four years ago. You looked after me then, and your husband was so friendly and chatted with me a lot. I’m glad to hear he’s doing well. It brings back memories, and thank you for your help back then.

The inn’s owner kindly checked the bus timetables for us and advised us about the hiking route to Yagyu Village, including the bus ride to Enjoji Temple along the way. That was a big help.
