The kids had a great time with the free colouring, origami, and Japanese calligraphy activities at the Nara Visitor Inn. We also found stroller rental at the Nara Visitor Center & Inn really handy while exploring Nara with children, since it's available from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The staff were kind and helpful from the start, and made us feel comfortable right away. Thanks to the team for making our time in Nara feel so special. I'd highly recommend it to anyone visiting.

On my third stay in three years, I'm still learning how much there is to see in Nara. This place is why I've returned four times. During my first visit as a traveller, I extended my stay to two weeks, and plenty of other reviewers say they've come back or stayed longer because of it. Closing it means Nara will lose tourism spending, and I expect local businesses to feel the loss too. The teams at the Nara Visitor Centre & Inn are a huge part of what makes it work. Their service and omotenashi are the best I've encountered. They're welcoming, culturally aware, fluent in multiple languages, and they help guests and visitors equally, without favouring any nationality. Muslim visitors can use the prayer rooms, and travellers can enjoy free activities like calligraphy and origami. The spirit between the visitor centre and inn staff is inspiring. They're friendly, prompt, hardworking, and proactive with suggestions. I've learned something from them each time. They help people find places to eat, shop, and experience local culture, and can arrange bookings, call businesses, explain transport, and point out locations. Whether it's tea ceremonies, crafts, dining, shopping, dietary needs, child-friendly spots, meditation, or incense, many tourists wouldn't find these things without the centre. They also have information on other parts of Japan, even Hokkaido, and have helped people plan trips to other prefectures. That brings business beyond Nara as well. For the hotel itself, it's excellent value in Nara Park. The rooms are large, bright, clean, and comfortable. The kitchens and laundry rooms are spacious, and it feels like a proper inn. The small guest bath is a lovely way to end the day. I've travelled around Japan for 12 years, from Ise to Izu, Natchiikatsuura to Akanko-Onsen, Dazaifu to Aomori, and Naoshima island to Nagasaki. This is the best hotel and visitor centre experience I've had in Japan. I can't believe Nara Prefecture is closing this amazing visitor's centre & inn in March 2026. It's a short-sighted business decision and a loss for Nara's tourism. There are no plans to relocate the staff or this valuable centre, and I truly hope the prefecture rethinks the closure and understands how much it contributes to Nara and even Japan. I hope the site doesn't become another eyesore brand like Starbucks. The staff are the most valuable part. Some have been here for up to 9-10 years, building relationships with tourists, supporting Nara's economy, and giving visitors a great impression of the city. Thank you to everyone who's worked here over the years, including those I may not have met. Travellers appreciate you all. Whether we met once or meet again, I wish you good health and happiness. Thank you for welcoming us, teaching us, and making Nara magical.

The staff treated us so well and were really nice. They offer free things to do, too. We learned to write our names in kanji, folded origami, and tried on a kimono. The prayer room was great, though small, with space for 2 people. They also gave us a card explaining which foods are and aren't halal when eating at restaurants. Free wifi and a place to charge devices as well. I'd come back to Nara just to visit here again. Thanks for the lovely treatment!

We had a great stay overall, and the public bath in the hotel was really good. Our west-facing Japanese superior room had its own bathroom and was spotless and well looked after. The catch was the central AC, which meant we couldn't set the temperature ourselves. It got a bit warm even in late Oct because the heat was already on. Luckily, they provided a fan. We opened the window and left the fan running all night without turning on the AC. Next time I'd ask for an east-facing room for a view of the pond. The location is very convenient, with a convenience store downstairs. It's not open 24 hours, but Lawson is only a few minutes away on foot.

Nara Visitor Center & Inn, also known as Sarusawa Inn in Nara City, is closing on March 31, 2026. I found it a few years ago and have been captivated ever since. Each time I visit Nara, I stay there, and the staff have always greeted me so warmly that it came to feel like a second home. Thank you all for the wonderful moments in beautiful Nara. Wishing everyone the best as you start your new journeys.
