Toyoko Inn Narita Airport Honkan

The room was fine for this sort of hotel, though we were in the older wing and it felt a little worn. We chose it because of an early flight, with Tokyo's airport so far from the city. It does the job as a basic, inexpensive place to sleep for one night near the airport, as long as that's what you're expecting. If we did it again, we might take a red-eye and skip the hotel if we could. The place felt like a factory, with what seemed like endless rooms and a fresh wave of one-night guests every 15 minutes. Breakfast had that same production-line feel, with bread or rice for early risers. Self check-in was confusing, but staff helped us through it. The staff seemed mostly junior, working in a rushed, high-volume hotel, perhaps to move on to nicer places later.

Getting to and from Narita Airport was easy, and the shuttle worked extremely well. The hotel is convenient and reasonably priced, which made my front desk experience all the more disappointing. At check-in I saw several Japanese guests receive free room upgrades, while I was told no rooms were available when I asked. During that same conversation, another Japanese guest was upgraded by a different staff member. Our room was extremely small, with barely space left once our suitcases were inside. The hotel already knew how much luggage we had because we'd sent it ahead. When I went back to explain, I wasn't allowed to speak with the manager. I was then told upgrades were random, which didn't match the earlier claim that there were no rooms available. I asked for the same free upgrade other guests had received and was asked to pay an extra 3,000 yen. I know upgrades aren't guaranteed, but seeing Japanese guests upgraded for free while I was told there was no availability and then asked to pay made me feel I was treated differently as a foreign guest. It left a bad impression despite the good location, fair price, and excellent shuttle.

The room was small but laid out really well and was very comfortable. There's a free shuttle that runs to and from the airport, plus a complimentary breakfast buffet. A small convenience store on the ground floor is stocked surprisingly well. This place has what you need for a stay near Narita Airport.

Horrible service. We were a family of four caught in a typhoon and booked in a rush about 20 minutes before arriving. By mistake, we reserved a twin room for only two people. After they let us check in, they said they couldn't cancel or refund us because we'd already checked in. We asked to upgrade to a room for four, but they wanted to charge us double. We explained we could sleep squeezed together and didn't need food or services. We just needed about four hours of sleep before our rebooked flight. They offered no option and no refund, then sent us outside into the typhoon with a very cold attitude. The front desk staff were laughing at us. They only seemed interested in making money. Don't support this place.
