I wouldn't recommend staying here with luggage for more than one night. It might suit backpackers who leave nothing in their rooms during the day. The guesthouse floors sag in places and feel as if they could crack under too much pressure. There was no key for locking the room while we were out, or even a safe for valuables. The toilet was just a bowl with a plastic seat, unlike the toilets elsewhere in Japan, such as at rest stops, hotels, airbnbs, and capsule hotels. The rooms weren't very clean, the futons felt flat and in need of replacement, and the cupboards where they were stored had visible dust and hair. The owner also didn't show us how to put the clean cloths on the futons.

We loved staying here as a family and wished we could have spent more days. The owners are very sweet and made us feel at home. It's quiet, has easy access to the wind/ice caves, and is close to a convenience store. There's also a smoking area if you smoke, and a big bathing area. The place looks really cool and took us back in time.

The bus service is poor, and the location feels like a ghost city. An old man manages the property, with dirty things around. The lavatory was the worst, and there was no door lock or clean water. The garbage smelled like it had been sitting for a week. It was an unhygienic, insecure place and a waste of time and money.

Bugs were crawling everywhere, in the room, hallway, and toilet. If you can't stand bugs, you absolutely can't stay here. I complained, but the owner did nothing, and I left feeling very upset. I had booked two nights, but when I asked to check out that same day, I was refused even a penny in refund.

I love Narusawa-so and want to support it forever. It's such a fun place, and these days you can stay room-only for cheap. The stuffed bird is just barely cute. Next to it there's an old cigarette vending machine with old Seven Stars for 200 yen? I can't bring myself to put in a coin in case it swallows it. The place feels like time stopped in the Showa era, with lots of old idol records on display. The floors crack and creak, even on the way to the bath, where they sink underfoot. The thrill of thinking they might collapse today is irresistible.
