Hotel Welco Narita

An old but functional budget option, very close to the train station. The rooms are fairly spacious, and the convenient location makes up for some of their age. Don't expect luxury at this price. There's a microwave and vending machine by the elevator lobby in the annex, where we always seem to get assigned a room even though the main building also has guest rooms. The hotel also offers an inexpensive coffee and pastry set to take away for breakfast.

If I could, I'd give it zero stars. A very large group was staying there when we arrived, which was fine, but getting to our room meant walking down a hallway that looked like it belonged in a horror movie. Inside, we found someone's used slippers under the bed and a bathroom that was disgusting and filthy. The furniture was old too. We hadn't unpacked yet, thankfully, and left after about five minutes to find another hotel.

The location was handy, close to the train station with plenty of restaurants and shops around. Even though we booked months ahead, we got a small room in the annex, reached by taking the elevator to the third floor. There were only two outlets for three of us to charge phones, watches, and laptops. The room also had cosmetic problems, a peeling mirror, noisy fan, and small TV. After a shower, poor bathroom ventilation made the whole room oppressively stuffy. The beds were small and not very comfortable, with just one pillow each.

The location is mint, very close to what is probably the last station before Narita airport. Still, the stay was so depressing that we moved to another hotel before leaving Japan because we didn't want it to be our final memory of the country. Our room felt uneasy and worn out. There was no hot water, bidet, or heated toilet seat. The taps and bathtub were yellowed and worn, and there was visible mold in some corners. The TV was prehistoric, the cushioned chair felt rough and moldy, and nearly everything seemed old or refurbished. The bed was the only thing that seemed updated, but even that felt dated and used. At least the room was spacious compared with the other rooms we'd stayed in around Japan. The area also felt old and out of date, and it didn't feel safe with guys smoking by the unlocked back door, where there were no guards and anyone could walk in. This might suit people who don't mind western-style motel units. The whole place felt old and rugged, with attempts made to maintain it. Maybe some rooms are better than ours, but ours really wasn't it.
