We picked this place for a night in Nasu last September with our small dog, encouraged by all the positive reviews. There were good things: the whole facility was thoroughly cleaned, the food was freshly cooked, and drinks were provided in the room. But the owner’s behavior and attitude left us so disappointed that we gave this rating. We were a couple in our twenties, staying alongside three couples around 40-50, each with a medium or large dog. At dinner and breakfast, guests brought their dogs to the dining room at the times set by the facility, and everyone ate together. The female owner mainly served the food. She chatted with the other couples and petted their dogs as she served them, but didn’t speak to us or our dog at all. We could clearly see and hear the other guests in the same room, and the difference in treatment made us very uncomfortable. Maybe she didn’t approach us because we were younger, but we were especially disappointed when she ignored our dog as it came over. Our dog hadn’t barked or caused trouble, and was quietly lying down waiting for the meal. The way it was treated felt unforgivable. Surely an innkeeper should treat all guests fairly. It was our first family trip in a long time, and we came away deeply let down. We’ll never return, and can’t recommend this hotel.
There’s a dog run about the size of three tennis courts, plus a walking path among deciduous trees, so my dog had plenty of room to exercise. After a long walk, there’s a paw-washing spot by the entrance. The room was clean, there was a good range of complimentary drinks, and the food was delicious. I stayed with my dog and would definitely come back.
The rooms and bathrooms were very clean, the dog run was well kept, and it was thoughtful of them to send a Nasu brochure ahead of time. The bath is basically private, which is nice for families, though be careful with the play equipment. We chose the place because pets were allowed. There’s a washing spot and towels by the entrance, but they don’t supply things like cages or pet sheets, and there’s nowhere in the room set up for pets to relax, so bring your own. You also need to bring pet food and feed them in the room. Pets can’t be left alone during meals, and they have to wait on the floor, so I suggest bringing a stroller. The meals mixed Japanese and Western food and included a lot of dairy. Bring pajamas too.
The dogs in the big run always look so happy racing around. There’s tree shade in summer, and once the leaves fall in winter, sunlight reaches the area. The grass cushions their steps, which feels safe for senior dogs. This place is dog-friendly in a way that works for people too, and I look forward to every visit. I’ve been here many times, and it’s consistently clean with delicious food. There aren’t major steps from the entrance to the guest rooms, so senior dogs and dogs using wheelchairs can get around without trouble. The staff know a lot about animals and are often helpful.
The dog run was roomy enough for large dogs and had plenty of shade, which made it a nice space for dogs. The room and bathroom were both very clean, and the food was outstanding. I stayed in August and enjoyed a peaceful chat with the owners outside tea time. They’re a lovely couple with warm smiles. I’d definitely like to come back if I travel to Nasu again.
