It was fine, but nothing stood out. I only stopped for one night, so there's not much else to say.

The price worked well for me since the amenities are sparse and you can bring or rent the things you need. I also liked the service style. Some people might find it unfriendly, but the distance felt right, and when I asked the front desk about a noisy room in the middle of the night, they responded straight away. I went back to the open-air bath in the morning even though it was very cold. The crisp air was refreshing. I wasn't sure how to tell if the bath was in use, but reviews mention a light for that, which is a thoughtful idea. The indoor and outdoor baths are both private and can be locked, with access from 4 PM until 9:30 AM. The indoor bath has a spacious tub with a floating heat-retaining sheet, hot water, and a window that doesn't look outside. Its changing area has three baskets, a sink and mirror, two hair dryers, a fan, and a washing area with two stations, one of which doesn't work. The shower button only works while bathing. Shampoo, conditioner, and body soap are provided. The open-air bath has four baskets, a mirror, a hair dryer, one washing area, an adjustable shower, and amenities. Its tub is small but has a floating heat-retaining sheet. The water felt about right, though maybe a bit cool because it was cold. The changing room was cold, and the foot mat was soaked and chilly. No scale, clock, or water dispenser there. Breakfast was the same on both mornings: egg roll, pizza bread, sausage roll, and regular roll, with water, orange juice, milk, and coffee. I went early, but the bread wasn't warm, which was a little disappointing. It still tasted very good. The room was small but tidy enough, with a bathroom and toilet, a large TV, air conditioning, a heater, a table, two chairs, tissues, bath and face towels, and adjustable lighting. The small fridge had a broken adjustment knob, there were two hangers and one free power outlet, and no clothes were provided for the bathroom, though you could rent them for 150 yen. There was no towel rack, bath, teacups, glasses, tea bags, snacks, or clock. The walls are thin, so voices carry. A heat-retaining sheet was also in the bathtub, and mismatched character figures gave the place a homey feel. With no noisy guests, I think it's quite good. Wi-Fi, free parking, ice, a vending machine, and bicycle rental were available. There was no elevator. In the hallway were a microwave, electric kettle, instant coffee, and paper cups. There's a smoking area outside the entrance, manga, and toothbrushes available by asking at the front desk. Check-in was from 4 PM, check-out by 10 AM, and bread and drinks were served from 7:30 to 9 AM. January 2 and 3, 2025, Thursday and Friday. Pension Hoho. Western-style double room, room only, two nights for two people.

For what I paid, I was very satisfied. I think most people staying here have chosen it for the low price, and that shapes my rating. The general service isn't especially high-end, and the individual parts aren't remarkable, but none of the shortcomings bothered me. The large shared bath is actually a private family-style bath, and there's enough room in the tub to stretch out alone, though I found the water a bit hot. Rooms are neat and feel privately cleaned, despite dated wallpaper. Air conditioning and Wi-Fi make them comfortable throughout the year. The fridge froze about half the plastic bottles inside overnight. If you want to play games, handhelds are the practical choice since connecting to HDMI is difficult. Bath towels are in the room and toothbrushes are at the counter. Old manga and coffee are available outside the room. There's a western-style toilet in the room, but nearby shops are scarce, and you'll need a car, so plan dinner and shopping ahead. I was still very happy with the stay.

The location seemed good, but cleanliness was a serious problem. There was dust in the room, and the fridge had clumps of hair and mold inside. The bedding had visible stains and debris too, which made the stay unpleasant. I hadn't expected much hospitality, but basic hygiene really matters.

I appreciated being left to myself after check-in. I stayed two nights in a twin room, and perhaps I was lucky, because I didn't run into any other guests and had the place to myself. It had free Wi-Fi, a fridge, TV, washlet toilet, two hangers, and bath and face towels. There were no cups, glasses, other amenities, or hand soap. My used towels were replaced when I left on the second day. You can use the indoor and outdoor baths from 4 PM until 9 AM the next morning. Lock the changing room door to put up the "in use" sign, then you have the bath to yourself. Breakfast was free and included pizza bread, rolls, and egg sandwiches. We got a sausage roll on the first morning and a chocolate roll on the second. Everything was soft, rich, and buttery, and really tasty. I skipped the orange juice, but the milk seemed like it might be local and had a strong, delicious flavor. The entrance was a bit hard to spot. Cutting back the grass over the sign would make it easier to find. I'd stay here again on a visit to Nasu. Thanks for the hospitality.
