I only booked one night as a stop on my way from Narita to Yamagata, and wished I could have stayed longer. The room looked out toward the mountains, and the surroundings really impressed me. Staff were very courteous, and the large Western-style room was clean. It has a resort feel and seems especially set up for families with kids. Breakfast had a huge spread and the food was excellent. I’d definitely come back for a longer visit when I get the chance.

The outside area was the best part and made the stay worthwhile. We were there for two nights with family, and the room was dirty. We’d been told some rooms were still unrenovated, but the issue for us wasn’t that ours was old, it was that it hadn’t been clean. The indoor kids’ areas looked fun, but the toys were old and broken, and the train wasn’t running. Breakfast was crowded and the food didn’t impress us. I’d suggest a nearby coffee shop or grabbing combino sandwiches to eat in your room. They did have coffee, tea, and snacks available in the afternoon, plus drinks at night, which was nice. This isn’t a luxury hotel. Also, despite being family-friendly, there are no private onsens, so family members have to split up to bathe. We’ve stayed at better hotels in the area, so I’d check out other options too.
I’d read some worrying reviews, but we had a really lovely stay. The room was spotless and comfortable, and the kids enjoyed the play area. Staff were friendly, and even when breakfast and dinner were busy, things ran smoothly. Adults had a nice place to unwind too, with the free lounge bar open in the afternoon and evening. The hot spring facilities were easy to use with kids and felt family-friendly. Honestly, we had nothing to complain about. Highly recommend!
I slept poorly because the room got noisy early in the morning, with lots of children already up and possibly active in their rooms. The onsen was nice and kid-friendly, with a children's bathtub and foam cleanser provided. At check-in, a female staff member at the front desk said my family and I could enjoy the Night Lounge snacks even though we hadn’t bought dinner or breakfast. Maybe it was a language barrier. It might be clearer to say the night lounge is open to all hotel guests.
Those mountain views were great, and the breakfast buffet had unlimited soft-serve ice cream 🍦. The washing machines were clean and handy, and I loved the powerful, high-quality hairdryer. Grand Mercure Nasu Highland was a wonderful stay, and I’d gladly come back!
