Japan Nikko Pension L'escale

It's a simple place with a homey feel and a good budget option in Nikko. It is a bit out of the way, but Kaz will drive you to and from town and give you great tips on things to see and do. He also cooks well, and we had some great dinners.

We stayed six nights and were very happy with our time here. The pension is surrounded by the Nikko forest, quiet and peaceful, a lovely place to rest at reasonable prices. It isn't new, but it's clean, cozy, and well maintained. Our second floor room had its own toilet. The family running the place are kind, lovely, and very helpful, and the owner speaks English very well. We had breakfast and dinner at the pension, and the owner is a very good cook. My husband gained some weight by the time we left. The station is about 1.8 km away, with a large parking area if you have a car. There's also a bus stop around 200 m away. We had luggage, so the owner picked us up from the station. In fact, most days he drove us to the station in the morning and collected us again in the evening, so we never got to take the bus! 😄 We had such warm hospitality and would definitely come back.

We had a lovely one night stay with a group of friends. The host was friendly and helpful, and drove us to the onsen in the evening. He also offered a lift to the station. It's a nice location, about a 25 minute walk from Nikko station, and there's a comfy shared room guests can use until 11 pm. I'd definitely recommend it.

This comfortable, homey place is just outside town, and waking up to the birds and walking over the bridge to see the river and waterfalls was beautiful. The hosts were warm and helpful with everything. Kazu-san gave me maps, activity ideas, logistics tips, and a couple of rides into town. His cooking was amazing, especially the breakfasts, the best by far in 7.5 months of travel. I loved every part of my stay, especially Kazu-san and his sweet mother. Best hosts!
