It’s quiet and secluded right in front of the lake, which made the location perfect for us. The bus stop and a grocery store are about 10 minutes away. Rooms are clean, and you can get dinner and breakfast here if you order in advance.

This could suit you if you want a traditional Japanese stay at Chuzenji-ko. It’s not luxurious or sterile: you sleep on futons and tatami, share a bathroom that’s a warm bath or onsen, and eat traditional Japanese food prepared by a caring, wonderful lady. It’s a good idea to know some basic Japanese. I didn’t know how to dress a Japanese bed properly, and I would’ve liked a towel. Maybe she forgot one during my stay. If you’re up for an adventure, book it.
We only spent one night, and it was an unpleasant stay. The room was dirty, with lots of black hair lying around, and there was no AC. The shower room was very old and covered in mould.
The included breakfast and dinner were excellent, with generous portions. The staff were friendly and very helpful. Their English was limited, but enough for us. After we checked out, they even had coffee and chocolates ready for us that afternoon. I’d definitely stay again.
It felt like a wonderful Japanese experience, with such a welcoming host that staying there was almost like living with grandma, while still having more privacy. The food was great and the room cosy. I’ll definitely come back.
