The domestic beef steak bowl was perfectly medium rare, with an amazing garlic flavor. I’d eat it every night if I could. Set meals were generously sized and reasonably priced, and this was one of the few places open on a Tuesday night. After a long hike, it was a great meal, served by a very sweet elderly couple. It was refreshing to find a local spot among all the chain hotels. Support the locals! Not sure why Google Maps lists this as a hotel. It’s definitely a restaurant.

I stopped in on a cold winter afternoon and the warm sake hit the spot. The hamburger steak, fried fish, and beef set were all tasty, and we also ordered French fries and fried chicken. I’d come back to this restaurant next time I’m in the area.

We tried the beef steak bowl and beef steak set, and both were great. We were 2 adults + 1 kid, with French fries and Sake on the side, and the total came to around 6.3K yen, which felt reasonable. Pension Friendly is one of the handful of restaurants still open at Lake Chuzenji after 4pm. The old couple who run it are super nice and friendly. Highly recommend if you’re hungry in Nikko.

Really tasty, homey food. I had the beef steak rice bowl set for dinner, and it was delicious. The elderly couple running the place are so sweet, and the cooking is excellent. Great value for money. Like most restaurants around here, it closes earlier than places in the cities.

We had the beef bowl, a big portion with the meat cooked just right, plus yubu, a local delicacy, as a side. It was absolutely delicious. The restaurant is right across the street from the Lake Chuzenji excursion boat terminal. At about 2200 yen per meal, the price seems reasonable for the location. They take both card and cash, which is handy.
