After ten years away, I came back here to rest my tired body and mind from the intense heat. The building has aged, and you can feel time passing, but there was real comfort and nostalgia in being greeted by the owner couple. I’ve grown tired of the business-hotel-like places opening around Nikko, with smart check-in and check-out that expect you to use your phone. The old-fashioned welcome here felt refreshing. In the dining hall, French cuisine is served while bossa nova plays from the owner’s prized stereo system. Tomorrow morning I’m looking forward to breakfast with an old disc music box playing.

The breakfast was delicious, and the rooms were lovely with warm decor. Two elderly people run this guesthouse.

The music boxes are what made this guesthouse memorable for me. There are old ones worth seeing even if you’re just passing by, and you can listen to them play during a stay. It’s run mainly by an elderly couple. The husband is very talkative and has all kinds of stories. My husband and I ate at our usual restaurant for dinner, but after tasting the guesthouse breakfast, I’d like to try dinner here someday. It’s along the road up to Kirifuri Highlands. The guest rooms are a little dated, and the location can be hard to find, though there’s a sign if you don’t miss the entrance. The private bath isn’t a hot spring, but it’s nice for relaxing with family or as a couple. Coming back late at night, we suddenly met a mother deer and her baby. They looked surprised, and both froze when something happened unexpectedly.

The dinner was delicious, and the deep bath was relaxing. They even drove me to the station in the morning. At breakfast, I loved the retro music box, and the heated floors in the dining area were a nice touch. They also lend out yukata. I enjoyed chatting with the owner, though I was a little concerned by mold on the unit bath door.

Breakfast and the private bath were both lovely, and the owner was great too. I liked the antiques and the music box playing at breakfast. We booked without dinner, but I’d definitely stay here again on another trip to Nikko.
