The meals were a real highlight, with a generous range of dishes at both dinner and breakfast, served in private rooms. The rooms were warm, comfortable, and well kept. I was running late for check-in and dinner, but the innkeeper stayed understanding, replied promptly by email, and gave us advice about the local taxi service. After I shared our arrival time, they still met us at the door even though we were late. They also accommodated my group’s dietary restrictions very well. It was a lovely stay in a beautiful location, and I’d choose this inn again next time I’m in the area.

The town was peaceful and small, near a lake, and there are several onsen wells around it, including one dedicated to this ryokan. I enjoyed getting to see the source of the onsen. My room was warm and spacious. At the parking lot, the welcoming lady greeted me and carefully helped with my luggage. The front desk lady spoke pretty good English, so I think foreign visitors will have a great experience here.

Snow on the first day made the stay feel even more magical, especially while bathing in the open-air bath. The rooms were comfortable, the food was delicious and beautifully presented, and all the staff were so friendly and patient with us clueless westerners. We had an amazing stay at this Ryoken.

We’d been walking around Yumoto Onsen for an hour and everything looked closed. Late April is still off season, so finding Yumoto Itaya by chance felt lucky. The staff asked us to wait a few minutes while they finished cleaning, then for 1000¥ each we got to bathe in the same water whose source we’d seen that morning. The outdoor bath is gorgeous!
