The innkeepers were incredibly helpful. She even arranged and called ahead about our next taxi booking and luggage transfers. We had a spacious two-room setup with two western beds and two Japanese beds, and we’re having a great time at this traditional ryokan. Our room has an ensuite toilet and basin, but the bathroom is the guest-only onsen, with showers. The hot mineral water is lovely for cuts and bruises, and it had us ready for bed in no time. For our last morning, we chose the traditional breakfast at 2,500 yen per person to get into the groove.

I’d worried Naraya Ryokan might be a little overpriced, but the money was well spent and the stay gave us a memory we’ll keep for years. The kaiseki meal in a private room was unforgettable, and the Japanese breakfast is worth having too. The Onsen water is just right for a long soak. Watching snowflakes fall while sitting in the outdoor Onsen was something special. The ryokan is on a lovely street, only a few minutes’ walk from Yu Road. Naraya Ryokan is beautiful and charming by any measure, but Akiko-san, her parents, and the staff are what make it special. They greeted us so warmly every time we came in. The three rooms we had were authentic and traditional, spacious and well maintained. If you arrive expecting the Park Hyatt, you’ve got the wrong idea. It’s sad to see ryokan like Naraya disappearing so quickly.
