I spent one night in a private room while backpacking. It’s not an ideal place if you have luggage: the stairs are extremely steep, the hallways narrow, and there isn’t much space. What I liked: it’s convenient, the place has SUCH COOL VIBES, and I LOVE THE ART. I’d love to know more about the building’s artists! There’s a shared kitchen and living area. It was cool inside, but the futons were so warm that I loved it. There’s a quiet policy after 9 or 10 pm, I can’t remember which, and I appreciated it after bad experiences at hostels that don’t enforce quiet hours. The other guests were respectful. Vibes, vibes, vibes. The old building comes with creaky floors, little soundproofing, poor insulation, and patchwork renovations. The showers and bathrooms could be cleaner and more up to date. They were pretty cold and dark, but I guess not stinky? haha I only interacted with the staff a little. They seemed reserved and introverted, or maybe just very busy that weekend. They were helpful, so it wasn’t really a downside. I’d love to come back and try the cafe. It feels chill, and I can’t wait to visit Onomichi again for hipster cafes, dessert shops, local artists, zines, and cat stuff!

We were sorry to have just one night here after cycling the Shimanami Kaido. The location is perfect, on a main street in Onomichi, with access through an old, beautiful alleyway. Our spacious room was beautifully decorated, and the shower rooms had lovely mosaics and really good water pressure. They offered us a discounted ticket to a local onsen, but sadly there wasn’t time to go. I’d definitely stay again with friends. :-)

The dryer didn’t work, and other guests knew about the problem too. I ended up spending a huge amount of time in the middle of the night trying to sort out the laundry.

The location is convenient and the stay feels like good value. The house has a tasteful design with a strong sense of history, and it’s cozy, though cramped. The female dorm has a lot of beds, but noise wasn’t a problem. The aisles are narrow, so large suitcases won’t work well. The place could use more cleaning, and the toilets need maintenance. The shower head was broken, and the lighting is quite dark.

Breakfast at the similarly stylish Akubi café was delicious and really cheap. The guest house itself is the most beautiful one I’ve stayed in across Japan, maybe anywhere. It has a strong retro feel, balanced nicely with newer touches and a real human warmth. The people running it are also bringing other formerly abandoned buildings back to life as thoughtful local workshops, cafés, galleries, and creative spaces.
