Suminoe Ryokan

We spent two days cycling the Shimanami Kaido and stayed here in Setoda. This is a historic, traditional ryokan, and the room we booked was comfortable and clean. We wanted one with a private bathroom, which was only available by booking in Japanese through the hotel website. Both meals were excellent kaiseki, and the service was very friendly.

Breakfast was such a good experience, and everything tasted delicious. The garden was lush and beautiful as well. Our room was just what I expected, with an incredible view, and the staff were very welcoming. Since it was raining, they drove us to the nearest bus stop and gave us an umbrella. There weren’t many other male guests while we were there, so they let my wife and me use the men's bath together, which felt like having it to ourselves. This is a place I’ll remember for a long time.

Setoda has a nice island feel, with small shops and a nearby temple, and the stay was a great stop while we biked the Shimanami Kaido from Imabari. The baths were closed, but they gave us tickets for a nearby bathhouse, so that worked out well. Rooms were clean and comfortable, the food was delicious, and both dinner and breakfast came with excellent service in a private dining room. Booking online was easy, and the email confirmation was clear. I’d strongly recommend it if you’re planning to explore Ikuchijima/the Geiyo islands.

Don’t miss the sunset from the spacious room, which had a nice view. The dinner and breakfast were both fantastic, and the town has interesting shops plus a nearby beach for swimming. One of the best ryokans I’ve stayed at for hospitality and food. Strongly recommend.
