We had three people in our group, but after we complained, the host moved us to a smaller place that only fit two. One of us had to book a hotel at the last minute and pay for it ourselves. The host wouldn’t refund us, even partly, for the inconvenience or lack of space. They also told us to leave extra fees in the mailbox, then after we moved, directed us to put them in the new property’s mailbox. We did that, but later got a threatening message claiming the fees were missing and saying they’d call the police. It was deeply unsettling. The original place was in terrible shape. The stairs were already narrow, and boxes cluttered the way up. In the kitchen, the table was stained, the cutting boards had an unidentified red substance on them, and old food was left in the fridge and freezer. Bathroom cleaning supplies were covered with dust and spiderwebs, so it didn’t look like anyone had cleaned. I even wondered if the bedding had been washed. The bathroom sink was cracked, the bathtub door was broken and taped together, and the yellowing tub had black grime in the crevices. Some spots looked like black mold. This was one of the worst stays I’ve had. The property was dirty and poorly maintained, and the host was hostile and unprofessional. I’d avoid it.

We left after just one night because the property was so unsanitary. Dirt and dust were everywhere, the bedding was badly stained and clearly hadn’t been properly washed, and there were multiple damages that made the place feel neglected and unsafe. The toilet had visible feces and urine stains; in the bathroom there was mold, a rotting floor, and heavy grime. Even though we couldn’t reasonably stay, the host refused to return the money for the five remaining nights we’d already paid for. We were also threatened with the police over a hidden per-person, per-night tax that hadn’t been clearly disclosed upfront. This was an awful, unprofessional and unsanitary experience. I can’t understand how the property is still listed, and strongly advise others to avoid it.

The building is great and close to the station. What bothered me was the owner entering the apartment while we were at the convenience store, without telling us first. I probably wouldn’t have known about the visit if we hadn’t seen him leaving as we got back. Maybe it’s a cultural difference, but I’m not comfortable with someone going into the room I’m staying in without notifying me.

The room is much bigger than most hotels or Airbnbs I’ve stayed in around Japan, especially for this price, so it’s good value. My one drawback was the lack of a desk and chair. Working, studying, or using a laptop could be uncomfortable without them.
