Hotel IL GRANDE Umeda

The lobby looked modern and beautiful, and the staff were exceptional. The room was just big enough for my wife, me, and our two carry-on suitcases. The double bed was clean and comfortable. I’m over 6 feet tall, and the firm pillows supported my broad shoulders, though as a side sleeper I also used an inflatable travel pillow. The air conditioning had only two fan settings, wouldn’t go below 20 degrees Celsius, and took a while to cool the room. The window opens, but we kept it shut during our July visit. There’s a 24 inch step up into the shower area, which gives you the option of using a bathtub. The lobby vending machine sells drinks, but only takes local currency. I’m a US citizen, for context.

We walked along Dotonbori Street and found all kinds of things there. The hotel was a good first stay for me, both for this place and this location. There are Aeon Supermarket, Family Marts, Lawsons, and 7-11s within walking distance. It was hot at this time of year, but the busy nightlife felt much cooler.

Breakfast starts at 7AM, which didn't work for us when we wanted to leave early for USJ and get there before the gates opened. The English-speaking staff weren't very good. Also, free water is only available on the 7th floor, so there isn't a complimentary bottle in each room.

The front desk team really made this stay for me. I left my engagement ring in the bathroom and only noticed while at the airport. After I contacted Il Grande Umeda from abroad, they quickly confirmed they’d found it and were holding it at the desk. Hwang was especially helpful, communicating clearly in excellent English and politely walking me through the shipping cost and the best way to send it home. The hotel was comfortable and nice, and the location was good too. I’m especially grateful to the staff.
