I liked the hotel's lived-in, homely retro feel, and the Wi-Fi was serviceable. The best part for me was that the hotel and the nearest local bathhouse are run by the same people, so you can get discounted entry to Irifune Onsen once a day. That became the highlight of my day. You need cash, but it's worth the effort: hire a towel, scrub up, soak, drink a bottle of coffee milk, and enjoy the massage chair. I can't recommend it enough. The room itself looked like it had a proper mattress, but it felt almost like solid concrete. I folded the futon cover over and slept on that, which was a little better but far from ideal. With my chronic back and neck problems and being an older side-sleeper, it didn't work for me. I travel on a budget, but I tend to avoid capsule hotels because a futon feels like granite, and I prefer a lockable room for security. I've been trying hostels with private rooms instead. If you have back issues and sleep on your side, you might want to stop reading here. There aren't many established chain restaurants nearby, and most options need at least one train or tram ride, which was annoying. Still, the hotel sits between two stations, including a subway, so the transport access isn't too bad. There are plenty of conbini, and LUUP bikes out front. The room also got bright like a microwave around 6am when the sun came up. No blackout curtains feels like a hotel sin to me. Cash is king here, and everything is extra. Towels, soap, and toiletries all cost yen. More places in Japan are taking digital payments now, and I often don't carry cash, so that was a nuisance. Bring your own supplies if you're staying a few nights. I travel very light and hadn't planned ahead, my mistake. If I were younger and more sprightly, I'd probably stay again, but I'm not. I wouldn't return, and would choose somewhere that includes toiletries, towels, blackout curtains, and a comfortable mattress. For younger, less broken people, especially back-sleepers, it could be worth a look if the price suits your budget.

The issue that turned this into a one-star review was the front desk attitude. This morning a staff member yelled at me, apparently because I was shirtless in the lobby after coming from the shower to ask about extra towels. I was given five tiny face towels at check-in and told to come back after five days for five more. I'd already managed ten days with the first five, but why tell me to return if they wouldn't give me more? When I came back that evening, the response was that they were out of towels. I'd also seen 10-15 other people walk through the lobby without shirts, so I don't understand why he yelled at me. Was it because of the towels? There were no signs or notes in the lobby about shirts. It felt like different rules for Japanese and Western guests. I'm not thin-skinned, but I don't understand why a customer should be yelled at. This place doesn't seem to understand being nice to customers. The hotel is cheap, about $23 a night, and definitely not luxurious. Rooms are tiny, around 10 by 7 feet, with western and Japanese styles. The Japanese rooms have very thin, uncomfortable futons. There's AC in the small rooms, two showers on the first floor open from 8a to 8p, and I never had to wait long. Each floor has a multi-stall bathroom, and there's a reasonably priced small laundry room on the first floor. In other respects, it was okay for the price.

For only 1000 yen, I got a single bedroom with a shared bathroom, and honestly that's more than enough for me. The building looks old, but inside was neat, and I had to switch into indoor slippers. The shared bathroom is actually a shower room, with coin laundry beside it. There's also a little kitchen next to the bathroom if you want to cook your own meals. If you smoke, you can do it outside while standing, lol.

I don't get the bad ratings, I thought this place was great. My small room had a futon, TV, fridge, and AC/heater, plus the Wi-Fi was always on. The room, toilet, shower room, and onsen were all clean. The shower is open 08:00-22:00 and the onsen 15:00-21:00. You can use the stove for 10¥ per 10 minutes, but there's no pan, so I think you'd need to buy your own. Really worth trying. Only issue was that staff had a hard time speaking English 😁😭

Set your expectations by reading the reviews, and this place is pretty damn good for the price. The single rooms are quite spacious for one person. It's a five minute walk to Shin Imamiya, and you get a free onsen voucher because there are no showers or baths here. There is a spot for brushing your teeth and washing your hands and face. Toilets are on every floor and get cleaned regularly. Since they're shared, their condition depends on who used them last. If the toilet on your floor is too dirty, just use one on another floor.
