Roots Hostel

For 5000 yen for two nights, it felt like a good deal. They keep costs down by charging separately for extras like bath towels and brush sets. I especially appreciated that they'd taped every door to stop them from slamming so loudly.

The laundry is cheap, and there's a decent izakaya on the first floor, but I had several issues. The elevator feels old, and the bath quality wasn't great, with an old-fashioned setup. There's very little luggage space, and you have to put the bed layers and pillowcase on yourself. It still gets expensive in peak season. Shoes aren't allowed, but one customer took theirs up to the room, leaving it smelling of shoes and socks. They need to do better.

This is a really good low-cost hostel, and the beds were very clean. The bar downstairs is good too. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. They helped me post luggage and pointed me toward some great local karaoke bars. It's not a party hostel, but I'd highly recommend it as a budget option.

The shared bathrooms stayed clean, the rooms were clean, and the staff were polite. I've paid more at other hostels and had worse shared facilities, so I can't fault this one for the price. I also appreciate the rules they have to help guests feel comfortable. I'll definitely return.
