Ryokan Bentenkaku

For 3,200 yen, two people get 50 minutes in a private onsen, with hand and bath towels included. It’s a great little spot for a day visit, and tattoos are welcome. The owner spoke very good English and took the time to explain what we needed to know.

I’d booked this for our wedding anniversary about 10 days ahead, after emailing and then reserving by phone. The plan was a day visit with a room, lunch, and private bath, with the meal around 3,000 yen. I spoke directly with someone who seemed to be the proprietress after she took over the call. When we arrived after driving about an hour, no one was at reception or anywhere inside. I started wondering whether the inn was even open, then learned they apparently had no record of our reservation. I didn’t know what to do. I asked the older man at the counter to contact the manager, but he said he couldn’t get in touch. He also said he didn’t want to send us straight home, so I asked if we could use the private bath. Afterward I went to hear from the manager, but never did. I’m beyond disappointed and honestly concerned. If they keep operating this way, I’m sure others will run into the same problem. I’d appreciate an explanation of how the reservation was missed and why nobody contacted me that day.

The building’s old, but it’s kept clean, and the hot spring water is wonderfully warming. Breakfast was delicious too. I come here whenever I travel with friends, and to me it suits a friends’ trip better than a couples’ getaway.
