Cool-Residence OTARU

We rented the whole house while I was staying with a work colleague, and it gets more economical as you add people. The renovated old-house interior had a lovely atmosphere. Wi-Fi and heating were provided, along with toothbrushes, towels, and detergent. The entrance was a bit narrow, though.

With two children, ages 4 and 2, who both have allergies, we stayed for three nights. Being able to cook our own food whenever we wanted, without worrying about the time or other people, made things much easier. The bedding was clean and nice, and there were plenty of towels. A large supermarket and a convenience store are nearby. Since many guests probably eat out, there may not be enough dishes for everyone. I wish there had been at least one set per guest.

It's a comfortable little 4LDK with a relaxed, homey feel, different from staying in a hotel. The place was clean and tidy, and I would stay again for the price. The futons for our booked group were already laid out. If you're not used to this kind of house, it might feel a little scary at night. It's tucked into an alley in a residential part of Otaru City, easy to miss as you pass by. There's no parking at the accommodation. I unloaded by the alley entrance, then used navigation to find a lot a few hundred meters north. It cost up to 700 yen. The walk back takes 7-8 minutes, but the unfamiliar scenery kept it from feeling boring. The key handover details come by email about a week after booking. I'll keep the method secret here. The standard bath was very clean, though it doesn't have a reheating function, and a yukata (Japanese robe) was provided. The sink was narrow and awkward, and I kept hitting my elbow while washing my face. Meals aren't included, but you can go out by foot or car whenever you like, or pick up convenience store food. There were restaurants near the parking lot, and more toward the canal, though they close earlier than you'd expect.
