The breakfast was a highlight for the price, warm and homey. The homemade beef stew had a nicely balanced mix of flavors, and the croissant was crisp with very light layers. I only wish the milk drink were better quality to match the food. Dinner was good too: chicken soup curry, though the portion was small. It was cheap, so I enjoyed it overall. The onsen was small but clean, with limited views. The open-air bath was tiny, closed, and had no view; the photos were taken while the onsen was closed. The hallway was cold in winter. My room was huge for the rate, with a fresh, refined wood interior full of design touches that exceeded my expectations. A French window corner gave me a great view of the town and ocean, and there was a historical desk. The heater worked very well. It was a shame there was only a coffee table and no desk in all that space, otherwise I would have given five stars, especially at this price. It's a modern, spacious hotel built around a real historic building, up on a hill in central Otaru.

I checked in at Kaihourou Hotel in Otaru and realized I'd left my backpack on the bus from Sapporo. The room and surroundings were excellent, but what made the stay memorable was the front desk receptionist's help. She patiently contacted the bus company with me, took down my contact details, and reassured me that in Japan lost items are unlikely to be taken. She later printed a map and brought it to my room to explain how to reach the bus service office. I got my backpack back without any trouble. By the time I returned to the hotel she'd finished her shift. I saw her briefly at checkout the next morning, but was rushing for a taxi and could only thank her quickly. I really hope she sees this review. Thank you for making the trip so memorable.

A few things to keep in mind if you're bringing lots of luggage, driving, or don't like walking uphill. This is a self-service hotel. Staff handle check-in, but there's no one to carry bags, so guests manage their own luggage throughout the stay. On-site parking is very limited and costs extra. If it's full, you'll have to look for another place nearby. Staff might say it's a five-minute walk, but uphill with luggage it could take 10-20 minutes, depending on your pace. Google Maps can help find nearby options. There's no entrance ramp, and the ground is uneven, making heavy bags hard to roll. You'll need to carry luggage over a few steps in the lobby and remove your shoes before entering. There is an elevator to the upper floors.

The room was very spacious, and the beds were comfortable. I wish they had other pillows, since these were very high and stiff. The public bath is basic but does the job. Staff are really nice, and the hotel is near Otaru's main tourist road. Just be aware that in winter the uphill drive can be hard if roads are closed because of snow or covered in ice.

Conveniently placed for getting around, with magnificent rooms overlooking Otaru and the bay.
