Inside, it’s a pretty ordinary older house, and it’s been kept up well, even if the outside gave me a little pause. You can warm water in the tub, and there are basics like shampoo. Having three rooms is handy too, since someone who snores or can’t sleep well can use a separate room. For somewhere just to sleep, it works well. I did have two personal gripes: there’s no TV, and the washing machine is outdoors. Being outside means it’s cold in winter and exposed to the weather, so it didn’t feel very clean. The electric kettle had mold inside, and I couldn’t use it to heat water.

I was here for new employee training and my second walking pilgrimage, taking the reverse route. It was a real help during the pandemic, when most places to stay were closed. You can check in and out without ever meeting the manager. The building is very old, but the inside is looked after. It’s about a ten-minute walk from the station and five to seven minutes on foot from a convenience store. If you just need somewhere to stay, it’s a decent option.

Finding the right house takes a bit of care. It’s in a group of several similar-looking homes, and I nearly went into the wrong one. Each has a light, but the lettering engraved on it differs, so check that to identify yours. Once inside, the main room is on the left, with the bathroom and toilet on the right. Farther in are the living and dining areas, with stairs between the master bedroom and living room leading to another room upstairs. The place is a two-story detached home with an antique Japanese feel. It’s incredibly clean and comfortable, with charming decor and very luxurious furniture made from high-quality, expensive materials. I slept comfortably in the master bedroom. It has Japanese-style decor and a high-quality memory foam mattress about 9 cm thick, rather than a standard bed. The power outlets are conveniently placed for charging a phone. The upstairs room is spacious and also Japanese-style, and could be nice to share with a group. I was alone and didn’t need it, and the floor felt a little scary by myself. The living room has a pretty floor lamp, a comfortable sofa, a table, and an air purifier. There’s an air conditioner in every room. I don’t like the draft from air conditioning, so I asked for a fan and they brought one right away. I appreciated that. There’s also an alarm clock in the living room, set for 7 o’clock. The dining area has a sturdy table for four, plus a fridge, sink, recycling bins, and a laundry rack. Towels and a vacuum cleaner are just behind the living-room door for everyday use. A hairdryer, towels, toothpaste, and toothbrushes are provided too. The toilet has a bidet. There’s a separate handwashing spot and a face wash with a mirror at the bathroom entrance, which is convenient. The bathroom has a small jacuzzi with a temperature control in front of it. The strong water pressure was reassuring, and soaking in the jacuzzi felt like it eased my tiredness all over. There’s a standard washing machine and a drying rack outside the kitchen. The Wi-Fi was strong and reliable, so I could work smoothly without problems. Around five to seven minutes away on foot is a large 7-Eleven with plenty of parking. Ike Udon opens at 5 AM, has reasonable prices, and the food was quite good. They have various fried foods and udon salads. Looking around, you can find decent restaurants, with more cafes and eateries toward the port. Sakai-dai is a rural area about 15 to 20 minutes by high-speed train from downtown Takamatsu, then another 15 minutes on foot.
