The staff were good, but I wouldn't really recommend the hotel. We asked for a non-smoking room and walked into one that smelled strongly of smoke, so we had to open the windows. The fridge didn't work even when plugged in, and just took up space in an already tiny room. At ¥6,600, a very small single room with one pillow for two people doesn't feel cheap.

The rooms are compact but clean, and they look recently renovated. It's close to Sakata Train Station, with good value for the price.

The front desk staff were polite at check-in. For my 5:00 AM checkout, they said I could just leave the key at the desk, though there isn't any staff available after 10:00 PM. The inside is clean and comfortable despite the slightly retro exterior. Rooms are minimalist and not roomy, but fine for one person. You can borrow amenities for free, while towels cost extra. A convenience store is about a five-minute walk away, and Sakata Station is nearby for train travel. The minimum stay is ¥4,500 per person per night. You can pay by cash or PayPay.

The entrance can be hard to spot, but the value for money is hard to beat. You make your own bed, and towels and gowns each cost 100 yen to rent. There's no washlet toilet, and the room tissues are just toilet paper. A good fit if keeping costs down is your priority.

After hiking Mount Chokai, I was glad to get a shower and a solid night's sleep in a bed for just 4,000 yen. I came a long way for the hike, and the room did the job. It didn't smell musty or smoky. There was a dog near my parking space. I don't know if it belonged to the hotel staff, but it was gentle and cute, and came over so I could pet it a little.
