The staff paid amazing attention to detail, and I’d happily return. This was one of the best hotel experiences I’ve had anywhere in the world, not just Japan. Toubou really lives up to its name: I could forget everything and just be in the moment. I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for an unforgettable experience.

The food was superb, with huge portions of local ingredients prepared simply in the usual local style. No pretentious “kaiseki”, just really satisfying food. The inn is tranquil and cozy without feeling too luxurious. There are only ten guest rooms, each with its own rotemburo and gorgeous river views. The main bath is quaint but not spectacular. All guests can also book the private rotemburo in 50-minute slots during their stay, and it’s not to be missed. A lovely choice for an anniversary or romantic getaway.

We’d stayed at Taenoyu the year before and had a great time, so we tried its sister ryokan this time. We liked it even more than Taenoyu. After a fairly heavy snowfall, we spent a night here in January 2024 in the Japanese-style room with the larger onsen bath (guestroom with an open-air bath2022renovated in 2022, large open-air bath+Japanese-style room). The in-room onsen was ridiculously good, with a breathtaking view. Service was top-notch and the food was excellent. The serving staff were such gems, keeping us engaged through the meal even though our Japanese was pretty poor. When the shuttle dropped us at the station on departure day, a staff member was already waiting outside with the phone charger I’d left behind without realizing it. I’m so grateful for that wonderful service. I’d absolutely recommend staying here, and I’d love to return.

The private onsen was fantastic, and the service was superb. There’s something magical about this hotel, a special place in our memories and a wonderful way to experience Japan in a traditional, luxurious setting. I’d recommend it for a honeymoon or private time with someone you love. Hope to visit again!

This place feels like a paradise in the forest, though getting there is part of the challenge. The onsen is deep in the woods, with only an unpaved road connecting it to the outside world. Driving that road really tests your suspension, and you could puncture a tyre if you’re not careful. Thanks for making such a lovely place.
