This place grew on me more the longer I stayed. The hosts are warm, friendly, and down to earth, and the hearty food is good quality and clearly made with care. I loved being here and plan to return. I’d recommend it if you’re after somewhere peaceful away from the crowds.

A lovely mother-and-daughter-run guesthouse, just a five-minute walk from the bus stop, so getting here without a car is no problem. The daughter speaks English well, and the home-cooked meals let you get a taste of Japanese culture.

The accommodation is simple compared with the higher-end ryokans I’ve stayed in, but the hosts put so much love and care into the place that the visit was memorable. They were lovely, and the home-cooked food with local Akita ingredients was amazing. I’d love to return in summer.

This place is run by a mother and daughter. The mother cooks meals using local ingredients, and the daughter speaks English and French. You can enjoy unlimited natural hot spring baths with your partner.

The baths have separate large and small sections, and are open around the clock. I loved the atmosphere and really didn’t want to leave. I’ll definitely return. During my trip to Lake Tianze, I looked forward to dinner and breakfast every day. The landlady, Fei Chang, was incredibly friendly and spoke perfect English. The meals were arranged beautifully each day, and the daikon radish in the photo looked delicious.
