The only thing that bothered me was that the blinds didn't make the room completely dark. Otherwise, it was a fantastic stay. We've visited over 100 Onsen resorts, and this one feels spacious and has that Onsen smell as soon as you walk in. The baths on both the men's and women's sides were very well kept. The mineral-rich water left my skin feeling soft after just a few dips, and dinner was excellent.
The inn serves seasonal dishes made with local ingredients, including Niigata Wagyu beef, and Nodoguro is also on the menu in winter. After a soak, you can enjoy seafood from the Sea of Japan as well as Niigata cuisine. The hot spring water has a rich emerald color, attributed to its sulfur content, and is alkaline, so it's said to be good for the skin. This inn uses the water without diluting it, which gives it a strong color and mineral content. Tsukioka's spring is famous for its green water and is said to have one of the highest sulfur contents in the country. Along with the large public bath, there's a private bath for 2,200 yen per group for 45 minutes. Some rooms have panoramic baths on the top, fifth floor, and the inn has 38 rooms with beds, including standard twin rooms.
The Onsen is so peaceful, and the dining was delicious. The entrance hall is huge, and the service is just as impressive. If you can drive, don't miss the chance to stay a night or a few. One of the best Onsen hotel experiences I've had so far!
We celebrated our second anniversary at Tsukioka Onsen in Shibata, Niigata, and stayed at Mashu Hotel. I'd thought the twin room might be small when booking, but it was actually quite spacious, with amenities provided. The toilet and shower were clean, though I still wouldn't use the glasses in the room, haha. The food was so good and beautifully presented. The course felt long and heavy, maybe my husband picked the heavy option, haha. We especially loved the murakami beef. The hotel is large and well maintained. Staff were really kind: they met us at the parking lot, carried our luggage, and explained everything at check-in. We reserved a private Onsen for about 45 minutes, which cost around 2,000 yen. I needed to rent it because I have tattoos and couldn't really use the public bath. Thumbs up for the private Onsen. I'll definitely come back.
I found it quiet and relaxing, and the hotel is a comfortable medium size. I'd recommend it for anyone looking to enjoy Japanese kaiseki cuisine and hot springs.
