There’s a promenade right in front of the open-air bath, so women should be careful in case someone looks in. Still, the bath feels incredibly open, and watching the sun set over the Pacific Ocean while soaking there can make you lose track of time.

You can enjoy both the food and the view at this inn on the coast of Shima. It’s known for its ocean-view rooms and Zankokuyaki, where the freshest seafood is grilled alive.

The ocean is right there in front of you, and the view is amazing. You can swim in summer, but there isn’t much else to do nearby. It could work well as a base for trips to Ise, Kashikojima, or Toba.

I stayed here at the end of 2007, and the sunset was spectacular. The Zankokuyaki, with seafood grilled whole, was absolutely delicious. I wanted to come back, but it closed in May 2018. Such a shame.

They’ve been in business for a long time, it seems, and have a registered trademark for “Zankoku-yaki.” The newspaper articles along the hallway to the bathhouse really give you a sense of the place’s history.
