The Japanese castle view is great, and the hotel is conveniently located. It seems to have been here since the 1960s. The room felt ancient, and the place was dirty and stained. There was a foot massager that looked about 20 years old, and the buckwheat husk pillows were uncomfortable. There's no water in the room, so bring your own. The cleaning lady was in her 70s, and we spoke with her. Nothing seemed to be getting replaced. It was an interesting experience, but the price is ridiculously high compared with other hotels in this category. The building is very old, and I don't see how fifty years of cigarette smoke could be removed without a complete refurbishment.

The room was very outdated, and I wouldn't recommend it. I arrived exhausted, hoping for a good night's sleep, but the alarm clock in the room went off loudly at 6am. I hadn't touched it. After that I couldn't get back to sleep, so the night was awful. They offered no compensation.

We got to check in early, which was nice. The hotel isn't right by the JR station, but you can walk there. There's lots of food nearby for lunch, and even during the New Year public holiday, the places closed late. The location's great: about five minutes on foot to the shopping arcade and free foot onsen, and ten minutes to Koi stream and the castle.

The staff were friendly, and the single room was comfortable with a view of the castle. You can buy a ticket at the front desk for the nearby onsen. I haven't tried it yet, maybe next time.
