Hotel Izukyu

The beach is right nearby, and there’s a shuttle straight to Shimoda Station as well as parking, which made getting around easy. The hotel is attractive and very well looked after, and I was very satisfied with the stay. Breakfast and dinner were both standard and met expectations. The outdoor hot spring was almost impossible to use because there were so many mosquitoes. Wi-Fi was also very poor throughout the building.

A clean, pleasant old-school place with a nice beach and a fabulous breakfast. Dinner is a huge amount of food for $28, but you have to reserve it the day before. It’s not a new high-tech hotel, so skip it if that’s what you’re after. There isn’t much to do in town. The staff were really helpful, and the onsen was relaxing. Take the trail and bus to the 7 waterfallshike.

The food was one of the best parts of our stay. Breakfast had a good mix of Japanese and Western choices, from bread and Japanese side dishes to grilled fish, fruit, several soups, and good coffee. Dinner was enjoyable and high quality, with hot pot, chef-prepared dishes, sashimi, snail, and the famous red fish. I avoided the raw seafood because I was pregnant, but my husband really enjoyed it. Our corner room had a lovely ocean view, though it was a bit of a walk from the elevator. The hotel provides yukata for the whole family, including cute sizes for kids, and it was fun walking around together in them. It felt like a proper Japanese holiday. The onsen was clean and well maintained, with indoor and outdoor baths, shampoo and amenities, and a spacious area for drying off. It was comfortable and easy to use with children. The beach was a highlight, just a 3-5 minute walk away, with white sand and calm, flat water that felt safe for kids. It’s also popular for surfing. There’s a large, kid-friendly pool, but it was closed during our mid-March visit. It usually opens in the warmer months. The daily free shuttle to Shimoda Station was useful too. A very family-friendly hotel with a nice combination of onsen, beach, and food.

The large indoor and outdoor onsens were great for a relaxing soak. Hotel Izukyu has dated decor, but the rooms and facilities are clean, large, and spacious, and every room has a lovely view of Shirahama beach. The staff were patient, kind, and helpful, with good suggestions for nearby sights. You can walk to Shirahama beach, the old shrine, and the striking torii gate. Reception also pointed us to a little-known park on a small hill where we could see beautiful kawazu sakuras without the crowds. Don’t miss it. Meals can feel crowded, but both breakfast and dinner were plentiful, with a decent range of food. A good base for southern Izu and visits to Shimoda or Kawazu.
