The traditional breakfasts and dinners were delicious and a real experience, though the portions were very large. I added meals to my booking and was glad I did. Getting into Shimoda town center was easy, about a 10-minute bus ride, and the hotel also has a shuttle. I had such a relaxing three-night solo stay at Shimoda Yamatokan. The staff were kind and helpful, the room was spacious with a gorgeous beach view, and the beachfront access couldn't be better. The onsens were incredible. It was a great place to travel alone, and I can't wait to come back with my partner.

The service was outstanding from the moment we parked. At reception, we were seated with tea and a small sweet while they handled the paperwork, the nicest check-in I've ever had. Our room was very spacious, with a hot bath on the balcony or terrace. The inn sits right by a lovely beach, with a great view over it.

We live in Atami, an onsen town, and soak in our building's onsen at least once a day, so that part wasn't new to us. What made this stay special was sitting in the bath attached to our suite, listening to the surf and watching the sunrise. We love the place so much that we're coming back next month, this time bringing my wife's brother and sister-in-law to enjoy a suite. Looking forward to it.

The food was five stars. Some of it was unexpected for a western palate, but we tried everything and loved it. You can ask for a western-style breakfast. We stayed in January '25 and really liked the onsen, especially the outdoor baths and the beautiful setting. Our room was a bit dated and could use updating. We were on the ground floor but still had a great ocean view. We booked the private onsen one night, and the views alone made it worthwhile.
