It was a quiet, lovely place to unwind after sightseeing, with amazing views and nice public and private onsens. They even let me cover my tattoo so I could use the public bath. The staff went above and beyond, including driving us to the train station before the scheduled time instead of calling a taxi. Getting to and from the station was the one tricky part if you didn’t book a meal plan with the room. The shuttle stops at 5pm, around when most dinner places open. You can walk from town to the hotel, but it takes about 30 minutes. I’d love to stay here again if I return to Shimoda.

The room was large and comfortable, and I managed to get a private bath because of my tattoos. We chose this traditional Japanese inn after seeing the food photos, and the meals absolutely lived up to them. Dinner and breakfast were both traditional, delicious, huge, and full of flavor. The staff were very patient with our limited Japanese. A Japanese friend came along and helped translate, but if you don’t speak Japanese, bring a translation app. For a traditional Ryokan stay, I highly recommend it.

Dinner kept coming, with one delicious traditional dish after another. This is a lovely, authentic ryokan, with comfortable tatami rooms overlooking the sea and a great onsen with a view over the bay.

There’s even a Pac-Man machine. The facilities are lovely, and they have Foreign staff who presumably speak English. The food is strikingly beautiful and plentiful, so it’s a good choice if you have important guests you want to impress.

The staff were so kind and professional, and the ocean view and onsen were lovely. I've stayed at plenty of ryokans, but the food here stood out as a work of art.
