I've been back to my favorite pension in Shimoda three years in a row. The nearest beach is about a five-minute walk away. The renovated room was clean and had its own toilet and shower. Dinner was delicious, especially the fresh, high-quality sashimi. Downstairs there are two large baths, each suitable for two or three people at a time, so they work for a couple or small family. There are also two outdoor showers in the parking lot, which you can use after a beach visit even after checking out. A couple of things to plan around: breakfast is at 8 a.m. and dinner at 6 p.m., and there's a 10 p.m. curfew. The walk from Shirahama Chuo Beach involves a somewhat steep hill.

Dinner was a huge spread: a boat-shaped sashimi platter, turban shells, nikujaga (meat and potato stew), and more. The tempura was fried fresh after we sat down, and dessert came too. Breakfast had freshly made omelets and other treats. The owner's wife told us as we were leaving that she'd dived off Shimoda herself to catch the turban shells. The whole building was spotless, and we could use the bath whenever it was unlocked and free. The stylish owner greeted us when we arrived, and later we chatted with his wife, who had such a kind smile. Their hospitality was more than we could have hoped for. We definitely want to come back and see them again.
The river below and the ocean outside the window, with a nice breeze coming through, made me feel like I could live there forever. The room was newly renovated and clean, Japanese-Western style, with a toilet, shower room, washroom, fridge, and air conditioning. The food was delicious and filling. There was freshly fried tempura, the usual boat-shaped sashimi platter, and sweet, tender simmered alfonsino. Breakfast was homemade bread, though it was a little disappointing that it was cold, perhaps because there were so many guests. The owner's wife saw me off and gave me a sweet orange as a gift. It was delicious.
The owner was kind and wonderful, and helped make the trip great. We had a very relaxing, pleasant bath, and the food was delicious. Thank you so much!
Parking is a little tricky, and the meals are served at set times, so plan your arrival around them. The food was delicious.
