Sea Side Pension Sakuraya

The owner was so kind, and we had a great time. The bath was nice, and the stay was very good value. If you can, get the delicious breakfast too. The beach is about a 15-minute walk away, I think. It's kind of tiring, but still manageable.

The owners are so welcoming and kind, attentive to every detail, and ready to help with anything. They speak English. The pension is quiet, spotlessly clean, and well maintained, perched on a hill overlooking the ocean and beach. Getting there by bus from Shimoda station was easy. The S31 goes to the beach, then it's a 400-meter walk uphill. There's a 7-11 and Family Mart nearby, which is convenient. A lovely BBQ restaurant overlooking the sea is about a 15-minute walk away, and the beach has plenty of surfers. I'd definitely stay here again.

We only stayed one night and wished we’d had more time. Mr & Mrs Yamamoto made the place feel especially welcoming. Our east-facing western twin room had an ensuite and big windows, so we watched the sunrise from bed. The whole property was spotless and homely, with both western and Japanese tatami rooms available. The shared toilets near the tatami rooms were clean and comfortable, and there are two communal bathrooms with nice Onsen baths, which you can arrange to use privately. It’s surrounded by nature and offers great value. Just be aware that getting there means carrying luggage 400m uphill from the main road, which could be tough if walking is difficult. For drivers, it’s easy to find and there’s parking on site.

The owners were lovely and happy to offer advice or help. Our room was cozy, very clean, and affordable, and the ocean view was beautiful. The pension sits up a fairly steep approach, so walking could be difficult for some, though its location is still very good. We really enjoyed our stay and would come back if we can.
