The spot high on the hill and the welcoming atmosphere made this one of the best parts of my coast-to-coast hike across Japan. I really appreciated how helpful everyone was, and had a fantastic stay.

The clear, young-moon sky was incredible. We could make out the Milky Way, and there were so many stars that Cassiopeia and Orion almost blended into them. That was a highlight despite the lodge being dusty and its facilities feeling old, as other reviews have mentioned. We stayed in a cottage for five over the Labor Thanksgiving holiday, in late autumn after the leaves had faded. The barbecue on the spacious lodge's wooden deck became a lovely memory. We started at 4:00, but by 6:00 it was completely dark, so we moved inside and used the hotplate. We walked to the main building for the large public bath, which felt wonderful, though it was dark by the time we arrived. I’d heard there was a path from the lodge area to the tennis court, but it was pitch black and we couldn’t use it, so we walked down the driveway instead. A lantern would have helped. For next time, I’d bring kitchen scissors, a mug, a dishcloth, and a face towel. Bringing chopsticks, a knife, and a cutting board was a good call.
