Sen Guesthouse

We spent five nights here and tried both the shared dorm and a private room, which had a lovely ocean view. There’s a well-equipped kitchen, good coffee, optional breakfasts, and plenty of shared space, including a dining room, sitting room, balcony, yard, and garden. The setting is special, above a bay with a private beach just down the steps and hammocks by the water. Matthew and Noriko were patient, generous hosts, offering ideas for daily outings, walks to shrines suited to our abilities, local activities, restaurants, and travel. We’d love to come back.

Matthew’s enthusiasm for Shodoshima’s pilgrimage tradition made the visit especially memorable, and both hosts were warm and full of local knowledge. The guesthouse is peaceful, beautifully designed, and spotlessly clean, tucked beside a quiet bay with its own beach. We’re hoping to return in autumn.

We only had two nights at Sen, with our eight-month-old son, but it was a wonderful family-friendly break between Tokyo and Osaka. The place is peaceful, beautiful, and friendly, and Matthew was happy to sit and chat over his own beer, which is great. He and Noriko have gathered lots of useful information about Shodoshima and gladly share it. The island is full of little surprises, and for us, Sen alone would make it worth visiting. We were grateful for a couple of much-needed days of rest.

We spent three nights at Sen and felt very comfortable there. The shared kitchen and bathroom were clean, and the house has a relaxed lounge area, balcony views, and hammocks on the beach. The owners were welcoming and suggested island activities that fit our schedule. We tried every suggestion and didn’t regret any of them. Getting there means taking a bus, but it stops right outside the guesthouse at the official stop called “Sen Guesthouse,” even though Google Maps doesn’t show it. Renting a bicycle is also a good idea if you want more freedom to explore.
