I slept well and had a peaceful evening and morning in a nicely sized tatami room. It was a lovely Japanese-style space with a lot of care put into it. The bathroom is rather small, so sharing it among two or three people could feel awkward. I'd rather have it to myself to relax, and a safe or some other place for valuables would be reassuring. Dinner was filling and satisfying: cod hot pot, scallops, oysters, boiled crab, tempura, simmered fish, sashimi, grilled shrimp, salmon carpaccio, vinegared horse mackerel, chawanmushi, seaweed tsukudani, and melon. The rice was a little soft. Breakfast had grilled fish, fried flounder, clam rice, scrambled eggs, raw vegetables, grated daikon, natto, whitebait and wakame salad, and sea lettuce miso soup. I went back for more rice and clam rice. I'd like to bring my family here next time.
We had a New Year's party with the January group, and it was a lot of fun. The food was delicious, just as you'd expect from Soma Beach. It's a shame the bath is a bit small, though, since it's not a hot spring.
The view of the sky and sea was wonderful and really relaxing. We had the 13,000 yen plan, with far more seafood than we could eat, including snow crab, flounder, and horse mackerel tataki. I liked that they used local ingredients instead of trout or salmon. A few things could be better: the tempura needed salt, and the horse mackerel could use a small extra dish of ginger soy sauce. The cod hot pot felt unnecessary, since we couldn't finish it and it wasn't especially distinctive. I'd rather have had clam rice in the morning. Plain white rice goes better with sashimi and simmered fish, and clam rice didn't pair well with the alcohol. The breakfast white rice was mushy and poorly cooked. The grilled Spanish mackerel and fried flounder also felt unnecessary. The mackerel arrived on time but was cold, tough, and tasteless. The bath was nearly scalding, so they should add a temperature timer.
My first visit to scenic Matsukawaura left a strong impression. I'd heard the scenery had changed after the earthquake and tsunami, but the sandbar still creates a striking, almost mysterious view. Tomoeya Ryokan is a beautiful building, apparently repaired with considerable effort after it was damaged again in the major 2021 earthquake. The plentiful seafood was delicious, and the reasonable price made it easy to relax. From the spacious fourth-floor Japanese-style room, I could see Matsukawaura and the old Matsukawa Port. The landlady was very friendly, and the stay was pleasant. I also walked around the nearby Reconstruction Market and Ohashi Bridge, and I'd recommend the market.
I stayed with my elderly mother and my daughter. The food was outstanding, and there was so much that we couldn't finish it. The men said most of them managed to eat everything! You can't see the shoreline, but my mother grew up at the port and found the place very relaxing.
