Breakfast is the reason I’d stay here again. It’s a simple spread of rice, grilled fish, and omelets rather than a modern buffet, but it tastes really good. The room feels like an old-fashioned business hotel, and the bathtub is on the small side. Having AbemaTV on the TV is a nice surprise. I heard SHIRO, the cosmetics maker also based in Sunagawa, is working on renovations, so maybe the rooms will improve. I hope they keep that breakfast.

The room, though, was unsettling. I spotted several dead insects inside the light cover, which gave me goosebumps. I attached photos, so take care if you look at them. Apart from that, I’m happy with the hospitality, service, and location. I stay here regularly for business, and it’s a great hotel otherwise 😅

The restaurant was disappointing. The food didn’t taste very good, and it looks like some old menu items disappeared after a change in management. I also noticed signs of cost-cutting in several places, which was a shame. It’s a long-established hotel in a prime spot right in front of Sunagawa Station.

The meal was good, and the wait was excellent, though the portion might be a little small for a man. The price seemed about average. I went for lunch after seeing the place featured in Press Sorachi, but the noise made the experience miserable. A woman at the next table talked loudly and played videos on her phone, and seemed to have finished eating but was still hanging around. Across the restaurant, a group of women kept chatting loudly even after their food arrived. Two acquaintances sitting diagonally from me greeted each other loudly too, lol. There were so many customers acting without common sense. Nearby foreigners ate quietly and chatted while enjoying their meal. The waiters didn’t say anything, so I guess this happens every day. Even crowded family restaurants or izakayas in Sapporo at night seem much more pleasant. I decided I’d never eat there again. The food itself was delicious, though, so next time I’ll get takeout.

My fifth-floor room was spacious and comfortable, and the front desk staff were always polite and carefully made up. The building serves as a wedding venue, and while it’s old with somewhat worn facilities, it’s well maintained and didn’t feel unpleasant. The bed was quite soft, maybe because of its age or design. There were no outlets by the bed, so extension cables would help. The unit bathroom felt small for the room, and blackened joints on the wall made the stains noticeable while soaking in the tub. They should be easy to remove with cleaning, so it’s worth checking. I chose Sunagawa because hotels in Iwamizawa City were fully booked for summer 2023. Nearby hot spring places had openings, but cost over 10,000 yen, and my work budget meant I needed somewhere cheaper, even if it was farther away. It’s about a 30-minute drive from Iwamizawa by highway. There are plenty of restaurants nearby, so finding food wasn’t a problem.
