Irori yado Hidaya

The staff are what really set this place apart. They were welcoming and courteous, and went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. Since we didn’t have a local Japanese number, they helped us book restaurants, and even assisted with lost property after our stay, though it wasn’t at the ryokan. The place itself is very comfortable despite being over 100 years old, with spotless, generously sized rooms that felt like home. There are plenty of thoughtful little touches throughout, too. The ryokan captures the Japanese spirit while still having the comforts you need. I wouldn’t hesitate to return to Gifu just to stay at the Hidaya again.

The hosts made us feel more like friends or family staying in their home than travelers at a hotel. They personally welcomed us and took real care to make sure we were comfortable. The traditional Japanese style and peaceful atmosphere encourage you to slow down and enjoy your time. The Onsen was clean and tranquil, and we loved it. There’s an optional authentic Japanese-style breakfast, with a Western-style choice too, and it was a lovely dining experience. This felt like a genuine cultural stay, and we hope to visit again.

Our hosts were kind and engaging, and we even had a huge home-cooked breakfast. The room had traditional tatami mats and futons, with a charcoal fire pit that was nice to gather around. A split unit kept things warm despite the chilly weather outside, and also has AC. I loved this heartwarming traditional Japanese ryokan. It was a wonderful experience and a taste of the real Japan. Highly recommended.

The only downside was being a bit far from the city center, though the walk was pleasant. They also had an open snack bar, which helped make up for the distance. We stayed three nights and had a wonderful time. Our room was large and quiet, and the staff were lovely and attentive. Getting to wear a kimono was a special experience.
