We got to Takayama and decided to try a Ryokan-style stay with my girlfriend. Even though we booked the same day, the staff were super friendly and explained everything over tea. They spoke English fluently and were quick to help when we needed them. You can borrow yukata in the lobby to wear around the hotel or outside, and there’s tea and sake to serve yourself at night. The private onsen costs a little extra and needs a reservation; there are public ones that are free too. The single private bath runs in 45-minute turns from 4 pm, so times can be tight. I’d book it at check-in to make sure you get a slot. The price felt worth it for the full experience, and you can choose a room with or without breakfast. If you want to stay near Takayama station, you need to pass by Koto No Yume.

Oyado Koto No Yume is close to the train and bus stations, with the old town and morning market walkable too. My family and I had a wonderful stay. The Japanese-style room was clean and comfortable, with tatami mats and futon bedding. Tea facilities, Wi-Fi, and aromatherapy were nice extras, and we enjoyed wearing the traditional robes, even out on the street. The Japanese breakfast was much better than the Western one we tried the day before. There’s also a vegan option, mostly fruit, for people who don’t love seafood. The onsen baths were relaxing, and a private one is available for a fee. Downstairs, they serve sake and tea from 7 to 9. The staff were friendly and attentive. We’d recommend Oyado Koto No Yume to families visiting Takayama.

We had a spacious room split into several tatami areas with sliding doors. We chose a Western-style bed, and both the bed and pillows were very comfortable. The hotel is quiet, tucked one block behind the station, but the sights are walkable and the train and bus stations are just a short stroll away. We came by bus from Matsumoto, which was very convenient. It’s a traditional Japanese hotel, so you take off your shoes and wear slippers inside. On arrival, we had tea in a Japanese-style lounge and got a helpful introduction to the facilities. The men’s and women’s onsen areas are separate, and guests with tattoos can use them. It’s a genuine hot spring and a lovely place to unwind. The staff were exceptionally kind and spoke very good English. In the evenings, there’s complimentary sake in the lounge, where guests can play the hotel’s board games and relax together. There’s also a small souvenir shop, free herbal teas, and optional calligraphy lessons or kimono dressing sessions. A charming place with outstanding service and an ideal location. Our Takayama stay was memorable.

I came back to Takayama for a second visit and stayed here for three nights. The location, rooms, and facilities were all good. I usually skip hotel breakfast, but the Japanese breakfast was tasty and good value. The staff were extremely helpful and took the initiative to assist with things like transport and restaurant bookings.

The ryokan was gorgeous, and we loved the whole experience, from the check-in tea to the evening sake. The private onsen, well-organized breakfast, complimentary yukatas, and house slippers all added to it. The staff were excellent, attentive, and helpful, with many able to speak some English. Our stay made the Takayama part of the trip. We’d highly recommend it and hope to return.
