This small, family-run Ryokan was just right for the traditional Japanese stay we wanted, with an onsen and easy access to Takayama's main sights. On arrival they gave us a kimono and slippers, since shoes aren't allowed inside. Everyone was welcoming and friendly. We had a multi-course traditional Japanese dinner and left full. The onsen was so relaxing that I went three times, and most of the time I had it to myself. I'd highly recommend it.

We were close enough to walk to the bus and train stations, and the staff at Ryokan Asunaro were very friendly. When I had a medical emergency and needed to go to the hospital one evening, we couldn't return before the 11pm curfew. They kept the doors open for us. The tatami room was beautiful, and the onsen was relaxing. I'd definitely come back next time I'm in Takayama.

The Japanese-style breakfast was so good I'd come back just for it. We had a very comfortable room and beds, and the staff were sublime. The location also made it easy to explore Takayama and nearby areas. We had the best stay at Royokan Asunaro.

A short 10-minute walk gets you to Takayama's popular sights, including Old Street. The staff were so warm and friendly. It's one of the cleanest, best-maintained hotels I've stayed at, and I'd come back next time.

The rooms were the most spacious we stayed in anywhere in Japan, and the staff were all very kind. We came as a group and loved the ryokan. Everything was clean, and it was conveniently near the bus station, train station, and city center shopping area. I'd definitely stay here again.
