The Machiya Hotel Takayama

Yuka was especially friendly and sweet, and even tried speaking Portuguese with us. Everyone on staff was kind and attentive. Our room was quiet, clean, comfortable, and well cared for, with lovely linen, a cozy bed, and thoughtful little details. The MACHIYA Hotel is wonderfully cozy, and we especially liked relaxing in the lounge. Coffee and hot tea were available all day, which made the place feel even more welcoming. We had a great time and would strongly recommend it to anyone visiting Takayama.

The staff were kind and helpful throughout, and the spacious room had a nice design. Since we mentioned it was our honeymoon, they left us drinks of our choice and snacks, a thoughtful surprise. The location is convenient, around seven minutes on foot from the main tourist area and two minutes from a 7-Eleven. There’s no parking on site, but the hotel arranged a reserved space in a nearby lot, about 200m away, for 1000 yen per night. The lobby has free coffee and tea and some cozy seating too. There are stairs to the rooms. Staff helped with our bags when we checked in, but we had to handle them ourselves at checkout. We also paid 1000 yen per person to use the private onsen, but it was more like a large bath with lukewarm water, disappointing after having tried authentic onsens. We had a very pleasant stay, though, with warm service and good facilities. I’d recommend the hotel, but skip the private onsen.

After a full day wandering around Takayama, it felt like coming back to a cozy home. Our room was clean and roomy, and the yukatas were lovely and comfortable. We even got different colors each day. The staff were warm and always ready to help. If you're driving, the nearby coin parking is easy to use and reasonably priced.

The rooms were spotless, with a traditional Japanese feel but very modern and impeccably kept. Both the young woman and the young man on staff were incredibly helpful. The young woman even managed to get us a table at a place that was fully booked, which really made our stay. I wish I could give this hotel more than five stars.
