I loved wandering along the quiet historic street in the merchants quarter, especially in the evening. The guesthouse is close to the bus stop, and there are hardly any people around. The building is about 200 years old, carefully maintained and refurbished, with stylish decor that still preserves its original character. The lounge looks onto a peaceful little courtyard, and there’s much more room than I usually find in Japan. The showers are modern. Oki was welcoming and helpful from the moment I arrived throughout my stay. Breakfast was a real highlight: the almond butter toast was the best I’ve ever had, and the little bowl of morning soup was so warming. I stayed in the upstairs room, where getting to the shower means walking past the cafe and communal areas. That felt a bit awkward, especially while getting ready in the morning, and the toilets are shared rather than ensuite. The cafe starts operating at 8am, with staff arriving early to work; at 8 a building-wide melody plays as a time marker, so sleeping in is very difficult. Still, I’d highly recommend staying here.
The arrival tour was a lovely adventure, carefully done, and the breakfast was cooked to order and delicious. Staying in this striking 200-year-old house, converted into a place to stay, was the best experience and made me feel at home in Japan.
The attic room was nicely furnished with two queen beds, and the traditional house itself has been well cared for. The location is great, right on Main Street Kawaramachi. My only drawback was having to use the shared toilets and go downstairs to the shower at the far end of the building. I’d suggest asking for a double or family room instead, since those have an attached bathroom and dressing room, plus a private lounge with a nicer atmosphere.
I’m already hoping to come back soon. The staff were incredibly kind and courteous, and the location in town is excellent. The beautiful traditional Japanese house has modern comforts, with decor that’s a dream for anyone into interior design. I loved the mix of pottery from the local area and western comforts. Great value for money, and an amazing stay.
The staff were warm and friendly, and breakfast was delicious, especially the almond butter bread. I stayed in the attic room, which had a lovely atmosphere. It’s a cozy spot in a historic street, in a renovated historic house. A very pleasant stay all around, highly recommend!
