For a place that includes breakfast, the price is quite reasonable. If all you need is somewhere to sleep, it works well: there’s a bath, and you can use the washing machine for 100 yen. It may not suit anyone expecting a high level of hospitality. We didn’t run into anyone in the other rooms. We could hear some footsteps, but people were considerate, so we stayed comfortably. There wasn’t a set check-out time, and some guests left early in the morning.

Even though it was early May, the nights and winter weather can get cold here. The nearby convenience store has a double entrance, so bringing a thick jacket might be a good idea. I came with my mother and elementary school-aged child, and our first guesthouse stay felt more like a laid-back visit to a relative’s home. A friendly staff member answered the intercom and walked us through everything. The room was clean, tasteful, and relaxing, with just enough sun coming in, and we slept well. It had air conditioning, and the bathroom and sink were like what you’d find in a regular home, so we had no trouble during our stay. Thank you, it was comfortable.

I booked because I was curious about the idea of “a guesthouse I would want to stay in,” and I’m glad I came. They explained the rules carefully, and the place was clean and welcoming. I’d definitely stay again, and next time I’ll try the hearth. Breakfast costs an extra 500 yen and includes black bean rice, side dishes, and eggs, with delicious Tamba black beans. You wash up after eating. The bath is free, and the room has towels, razors, toothbrushes, and earplugs. There’s a washing machine for an extra charge. Since the room rate is reasonable, snacks, coffee, and alcohol are available for an extra fee in the shared dining kitchen. It’s a good idea to buy anything you need before arriving. When we got there, we were greeted with a warm smile; despite the cold outside, the room was warm and clean, and smelled delicious.

The dining area opens onto a lodge-style space with a nice view of the Kakogawa River and the sound of wild birds. There’s parking, BBQ facilities, and two guest rooms that can sleep around 10 people altogether. One of the rooms has a hearth. I stayed during the May Golden Week break after visiting the wisteria park in Shirai-Omachi and the nine-foot wisteria at Byakugo-ji Temple. The shared areas were neat and clean, especially compared with city guesthouses. Around four international students, mostly from Europe, were helping out for short periods. The young owner joined us for drinks in the evening and talked about trying different kinds of rural guesthouses. I found it impressive that some international travelers come looking for the essential character of Japan in the countryside. Even a peaceful stay here leaves a lasting impression.
